Learning Activity 4: Teaching Aids Bank

Your Goal
At the end of this activity, you will be competent in preparing instructional materials appropriate to the learning content.
Your Tasks
To reach your goal, follow the steps below:
Step 1: Choose a specific topic.
Step 2: Find the resources relevant to your topic that are available in the learning center.
Step 3: Develop a pool of teaching materials (e.g. flash cards, pictures, cut-outs, etc.).
Step 4: Devise a box where to pool-in your teaching aids.
Your Tools
My Observation Guide
  1. Describe the learning resources available in the learning center that are useful to your topic.
  2. Discuss the appropriateness of the learning resources to your target grade/year level.
  3. Make a list of the materials that you can use.
  4. List down also some materials that you can make, and use for your instruction (whether transparency, slides, etc.)
When observing a class, take note of important data. Write your observation report on the activity forms provided for you.

Your Analysis
Why is there a need to make a survey of available materials before making your own materials?
  • So that, I'll know what I would have to improve when I make my own instructional material.
  • So that, I won't be making double materials if it's not needed and that would waste my time
  • So that, if a new material is new to me, I can be able to ask for help before using it.
Your Reflections
What materials did you like the most? Why?
Of all the materials, I like the educational videos (DVD and CD). I'm a couch potato myself, and the use of television would really get my attention. I loved educational shows before like Math Tinik, Hirayamanawari, and Sineskwela.

What difficulties did you encounter in making the materials?
Maybe before it was kind of difficult but with today's technology. And having a personal computer with an internet connection made my making the materials easier.

How did you overcome it?
I overcome it by being resourceful. I have to think other options and/or ideas if my first doesn't work or can't be done.

Make suggestions to the teachers in the preparation of teaching materials.
For the present and future educators, there are five rules that I think should be followed in making/preparing teaching materials. First, is to know your students kind of multiple intelligence and learning styles by this you can have the idea on what teaching aid to use without any bias on both sides. Second, is to sort out the possible materials to be used and will it be pleasing to the students to capture their attention.. Third, is making sure that the writing is visible and readable. Make sure what is written is easy to understand and not to much words or deep words, just the important one. Fourth, is adding details aside from what is the topic all about. You may add something that is useful in learning the topic. And lastly, is by making sure that the materials prepared will not be useless. This means that you need to make sure that the purpose of the materials is served. And the majority of the students did learned what is needed to be learn from the teaching aid.

Learning Activity 3: Utilization Of Teaching Aids

Name of FS student: Jennifer P. Madronal
Course/Year and Section: BSED-Math 3V
Resource Teacher:
Cooperating School: Canitoan National High School
Your Goal:
At the end of this activity, you will develop competence in determining appropriate teaching aids for learning tasks.
Your Tasks:
To reach your goal, follow these steps:
Step 1: Observe a class on its regular schedule
Step 2: Take note of the varied instructional materials used in the teaching-learning process.
Step 3: Give comments whether the teaching aids are appropriate to the learning tasks.
Step 4: Reflect on your observations.
Your Tools:
Use the activity form of your observations in this activity.
My Observation Guide
Before going to your observation visit, read the following statements:
  1. What is the lesson about?
  2. What visual aids/materials are being used by the teacher?
  3. Take note how the teacher uses the teaching aids/materials.
  4. Observe how the learners respond to the teacher's use of the visual aids. Do they show appreciation and/or eagerness on the lesson
  5. How do the learners manifest non-verbal response? Do you observe them to show interest, eagerness, and understanding?
OBSERVATION REPORT
Date of observation: February 06,2014

Your Analysis
What is the basis of the teacher in choosing such instructional material in the lesson?
According to the teacher, she used both the chalkboard and their book since their topic is a continuation of their previous lesson. The topic as easy to understand because information and details are in their book.
Do you observe any difficulty in the use of the instructional materials? How did she manage it?
As far as I've observed, she didn't have any difficulty at all.
Was the use of the material/s effective? Why? Why not?
It was very much effective that the teacher didn't dismiss the class until everyone got the idea of the lesson.
How did the learners respond to the teacher's use of the visual aids?
The students responded positively. They actively participated in board activities and it did make the teaching aid effective.

Your Reflection
Imagine yourself as the teacher. What would you do or not do if you were to teach the same subject to the same group of students?
If I were the teacher, I would make my visual aids prior my discussion, like descriptions and problems because it would save me time than writing on the board. And the attention of my students would be in the lesson. I would give incentives for students who participates or gives the correct answer.

Field Study 5: Learning Activity 2: Bulletin Board Display

Your Goal

At the end of this activity, you will be able to appraise the display boards as learning resources according to its effectiveness in conveying messages/knowledge.

Your Tasks

Bulletin boards are the most common and readily available learning resources in any school. In this activity, you are going to observe and describe the bulletin board display of the school you visited.

To reach your goal, follow the boards below:
             Step 1
Look around the school for a bulletin board.
             Step 2
Choose one then describe and evaluate the display.
             Step 3
Propose enhancement to the display to make it more effective.

Your Tools

As you look around and examine board displays, use the activity form provided to document your observations.

Name of school observed: Canitoan National High School
Location of the school: Canitoan
Date of visit: February 06, 2014

Take note of the following and write them in your observation report.
1. Number of Bulletin Board Displays: Two (2)

2. Location of Bulletin Board Displays (BDD): Right after the gate, fronting the Principals Office and inside the classroom.

3. Describe each BBD in terms of the following:

a. The message(s) it provides
:The board provides information of the reports of the school’s finance office. And also from Math and Filipino subjects. They also have the Student Supreme Government post. The BBD in the classroom were about schedules and top notchers in class.

b. Images and color
:The BBD were already outdated. It didn’t made an impact to me.

c. Arrangement of information/messages
:The Arrangement were pretty good, looks clean. But the messages and information weren’t enough.

4. Materials used in the display
:The materials used are plain white bond papers, and cartolina or colored papers.

5. Errors noticed, if any
:Most common errors are in the spelling and grammar of the information.

6. Borders, if any
:Some BBDs used borders as an additional design , and some were just plain wood.

7. Clarity of messages
:The message though are clear enough for the high school students. It easy to understand though some or most of the students won’t mind stopping to read the community bulletin board near their entrance.

DOCUMENTATION

An Evaluation Report of a Bulletin Board

Location of the Bulletin Board Display: The BBD is located upon entering the school gate and another BBD is located inside the classroom.

Description of the Bulletin Board: Both BBDs are outdated though the posts are current. And the BBDs are located where most students and visitors pass by.

Recommendations or Suggestions for improvement
: The board is good and simple but for it more noticeable and readable, it must be well decorated with colors especially that we are dealing here with secondary students. All messages and writings must be printed clearly so that it will give students more attention to read instead of just passing by. Putting some trivia or educational information frequently is also recommended so that its purpose will not be defeated in order to be fair for those students who have visual impairments, the size of the text must be big enough for them. For the classroom bulletin boards, I would suggest that the students are the one who would design the bulletin boards. Because in my old school, we were the one who designed and materialized our bulletin board. And every month we would change its theme.

Your Analysis

Describe the board design in terms of raising the target audience interests.
: As what I've observed the board design doesn't raise the target audience interests. It was dull and outdated.

Use of language in making the target audience's understanding of the information.
: They use English as their language in making the target audience understand about the information. Their use of the English language was very understandable, aside from the finance report. Secondary students doesn't even bother to read the finance report/s.

The intention of the Board Display
: The main intention of the board displays are for incoming activities and latest information.

Your suggestion

: I suggest that they would also take time to decorate their bulletin boards. What is the use of the bulletin boards if the children won't even take time to read what is posted.

You can make your display lay-out here. It may be hand-made, an electronic, an electronic generated one or a collage.
